В электронном письме, полученном в ответ на заданные вопросы, Адам Олтер, профессор Нью-Йоркского университета, объясняет отсутствие когнитивной беглости как «умственные затруднения, которые испытывают люди в ходе обработки определенных фрагментов информации – сложных слов; текста, напечатанного декоративным шрифтом; текста, напечатанного на фоне аналогичного цвета; извлечении из памяти смутно запомнившихся идей; вспоминании номера телефона и т. д. Для того чтобы обработка информации носила прерывный характер, не обязательно манипулировать данными или использовать их сами по себе. Это зависит от того, как вы определяете данные, – похоже, вы определяете их слишком широко. Если рассматривать любой когнитивный процесс как „использование данных“, ваше толкование, возможно, окажется близким к моему».
